The Dr. James Charasika Scholarship for Medical Students

Empowering the Next Generation of Compassionate Physicians

The Dr. James Charasika Scholarship for Medical Students is a $1,000 essay-based award established to honor the profound legacy of a pioneering physician. For over 40 years, Dr. Charasika was not just a doctor; he was a beacon of compassionate, patient-centered care in Louisville, Kentucky. As the first Black student in his college dormitory and the first Black physician in his residency program, he broke barriers with quiet determination. He delivered over 5,800 babies, built community-focused clinics, and dedicated his life to fighting “sick care” by championing prevention and holistic health. This scholarship seeks to support undergraduate students who, like Dr. Charasika, are driven by a profound commitment to service, innovation in medicine, and a desire to heal their communities with integrity and heart.

Eligible candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program and on a demonstrated pre-medical track, as evidenced by their course of study (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry) and professional aspirations. We are seeking individuals who embody the scholarly dedication and patient-centered ethos of Dr. Charasika.

Dr. James Charasika

Scholarship for Medical Students

James Denson Charasika, M.D., culminated a distinguished 40-year medical career upon his retirement in 2022. A Cum Laude graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College, he earned his medical doctorate from Meharry Medical College, graduating fifth in his class. Dr. Charasika was a trailblazer, notably as the first Black physician recruited into the University of Louisville’s Department of Family Practice, where he also served as Chief Resident.

His professional path was defined by a commitment to clinical excellence and systemic innovation. He was board-certified by the American Board of Family Practice and held academic appointments as both an Assistant Professor and Clinical Instructor. Dr. Charasika’s most significant contributions were in practice innovation: he founded the licensed and certified Louisville Primary Care Center, P.S.C., and later established the Louisville Patient-Centered Medical Home, P.S.C.—one of the first practices in Kentucky to be certified by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). He was a recognized leader in diabetes management and a vocal advocate for moving from a reactive “sick care” model to a proactive, holistic healthcare paradigm.

Beyond clinical practice, his career was marked by delivering over 5,800 babies, serving the “shut-in” population through home visits, and mentoring countless medical trainees. His legacy continues through his advocacy for affordable housing and healthcare via his non-profit leadership.
